As Bloomberg notes, Trudeau has been under pressure from elected lawmakers in his party to resign for months. That pressure has only intensified since Chrystia Freeland, his finance minister, resigned on December 16, saying she and the prime minister disagreed on policy.

Trudeau’s decision on what to do next is being made very carefully, according to a person close to the prime minister. The Globe report, which cited unnamed people, did not say Trudeau was determined to step down.

Liberal lawmakers are said to be planning to hold a caucus meeting on Wednesday.

After the split with Freeland, some of Trudeau’s closest advisers believed the prime minister would not be able to survive the political fallout, people familiar with the situation told Bloomberg.

More than 20 Liberal MPs have publicly called for Trudeau’s resignation, and even more have said in closed-door meetings that the prime minister has no choice but to step down. The Liberals have 153 seats in the House of Commons, including Trudeau.

“The country may face instability, particularly due to the economic threat of a potential 25% US tariff on Canadian imports from the new administration. Simply put, time is of the essence. It is not advisable for you to remain the leader,” said a recent letter sent to the prime minister -to Minister Cody Blois, who leads a group of Liberal members from the four easternmost provinces.

The prime minister has largely disappeared from the public eye since Freeland published her scathing resignation letter. Trudeau spent most of the vacation at a ski resort in western Canada and has not spoken to reporters since returning to Ottawa.

If the 53-year-old Trudeau does announce his intention to step down after nine years in power, it would set off an intra-party battle over how to choose a successor, it said. If he resigns immediately, the Liberals are likely to choose an interim leader from among their elected caucus members.

However, it’s also possible that Trudeau will decide to stay in office while members of the Liberal Party hold a leadership race to choose his successor. The timeline for the party contest should be very tight, given that the main opposition parties have said they intend to vote against the government in the next session of the House of Representatives.

Parliamentary experts said the government may only have until March before it faces a vote of no confidence in the House of Representatives.

Freeland has been calling Liberal lawmakers and is expected to run for leadership if the opportunity arises.

Mark Carney, a former head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, could also run if it’s an open contest that doesn’t favor incumbent lawmakers, one person familiar with the matter said.

Members of Trudeau’s cabinet frequently mentioned in party leadership discussions include Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly, Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and Transport and Domestic Trade Minister Anita Anand.

“Last night over dinner I told my children about the decision I am sharing with you today. I intend to step down as party leader, as prime minister, after the party chooses its next leader through a powerful nationwide process “, Trudeau said, according to Bloomberg.

Trudeau added that the Canadian Parliament will suspend work until March 24. He said he would stay on as prime minister until a new Liberal leader is elected.

The agency said the rejection of electoral reform dealt a huge blow to Trudeau’s reputation, especially among young voters who helped him and the Liberals climb from third place to a majority government in 2015.

War in Ukraine – Trudeau’s positionCanadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau previously stated that Ukraine should be able to use long-range weapons to prevent Russian strikes on civilian targets. He also believes that the war in Ukraine may end in the coming months.
