There are no trends towards an outbreak of metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Ukraine, as of the beginning of January 2025, it was detected in only 14 people.

The Public Health Center reports this on Facebook.

“As of today, there is no trend towards the development of an outbreak caused by the metapneumovirus on the territory of Ukraine,” the Central Health Service emphasizes.

According to his data, during the current epidemic season of 2024-2025, as of January 5, HMPV was detected in 14 people, including two children under the age of 4, 7 people aged 5-14, 4 people aged 30-64, one person per 65.

The CHG emphasized that this situation was also observed in the last epidemic season of 2023-2024 during the same period: a total of HMPV was detected in 24 people, including 11 children under 4 years old, 10 children aged 5-14 years, 2 people aged 30-64 years and one person over 65.

“During this and the previous epidemic season, not a single fatal case was recorded as a result of an infection caused by the metapneumovirus – all patients received medical assistance and recovered,” the department emphasized.

The Central Health Organization assures that all virological laboratories of the regional centers for disease control and prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine are equipped with test systems for the detection of metapneumovirus and conduct epidemiologic surveillance throughout the year.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) belongs to the Pneumoviridae family of viruses of the Paramyxoviridae family, first discovered and described in 2001 in the Netherlands. It is common on all continents.

Metapneumovirus, like other viruses of the respiratory group, is characterized by seasonality. Circulation of HMPV begins mainly in winter and lasts until spring. For the most part, HMPV infection passes easily, but HMPV infection in old age, against the background of concomitant pathology, leads to an increase in the severity of the disease. The incubation period is from 3 to 6 days.

Although anyone can get HMPV, those at increased risk include: newborns; children up to 5 years old; people over 65 years old; people with asthma who use steroids, with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with immunodeficiencies due to HIV, malignancy, or those who have had an organ transplant.

The virus is largely spread by close contact with an infected person (through the air and droplets). With HMPV infection, symptoms of the upper respiratory tract, such as rhinorrhea (runny nose), cough, or fever, are most often detected. Possible diseases of the lower respiratory tract: bronchiolitis, pneumonia, croup and exacerbation of asthma.

In the vast majority of cases, the symptoms of metapneumovirus are similar to colds or mild cases of the flu: runny nose, cough, high fever. Compared to influenza, the course of metapneumovirus is usually much milder and complications rarely occur.

The most effective preventive measures are regular hand washing with soap; avoiding contact with sick people; compliance with cough etiquette (you must cover your mouth with a napkin or the bend of your elbow); ventilation of the room.

We will remind you that there was an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in China, which led to the overflow of hospitals. The virus causes symptoms similar to COVID-19 and flu by affecting the lungs.

honored doctor of Ukraine Olga Golubovska explained how to protect yourself and to whom the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is dangerous.
