Researchers have calculated that a person who smokes throughout his life will live an average of ten years less than a person who does not smoke.
A study conducted in Great Britain in 2000 found that each cigarette costs an average person approximately 11 minutes of life. However, this estimate was based on assumptions derived from male-only data (for example, from the analysis of the average age of death of smokers and non-smokers). In the latest study, scientists from University College London have updated this assessment.
This time, the researchers were also able to analyze data from female smokers in Great Britain. They also analyzed the latest mortality data for British men, along with data on how many people smoked each day on average.
Overall, after adjusting for other factors such as a person’s wealth, the researchers estimated that people who had never quit smoking lost about 10 to 11 years of life expectancy compared to nonsmokers, up from the previous estimate of 6.5 years of life. They also calculated that each cigarette costs an average of 20 minutes of life — 17 minutes for men and 22 minutes for women.
Most of these stolen minutes, the researchers note, are taken during a person’s middle and healthy years, not at the end of their life. In other words, smokers are more likely to experience the usual health problems associated with aging during the same period, but reach this stage earlier. For example, a 60-year-old smoker will have the typical health of a 70-year-old non-smoker.
- Oh. Smoking electronic cigarettes causes the same changes in cells as regular cigarettes
- It makes sense to think. A ban on the sale of cigarettes to young people could save more than a million lives
- Unprecedented measures. The EU wants to ban outdoor smoking and vaping
