Details

It is noted that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Romania has informed that from January 1, 2025, the country will close 30 land crossing points – on the borders with Hungary and Bulgaria – but random checks of documents may still be carried out at the borders.

The Schengen area is a European space where border control at the internal border has been abolished. The accession of the countries will contribute to the development of travel, trade and tourism

According to the explanatory note, the abolition of internal border controls implies the need to strengthen measures to ensure public order and security, given that Romania currently faces illegal migration, given its geographical position, at the confluence between the East – as a migrant exit zone and the West – as destination zone of illegal migration.

The Council of the European Union has decided to abolish controls on the land borders with Bulgaria and Romania. They will join the Schengen zone from January 1, 2025.
