26-year-old Hediger, a member of the Swiss snowboard team at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, was in the mountain resort of Arosa when the incident happened, Sky News writes.
“We are devastated and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we extend our deepest condolences,” Swiss-Ski CEO Walter Reusser said in a statement.
He added that Hediger grew up in Horgen, a town about a 20-minute drive from Zurich, and spent a lot of time in Arosa.
He said she died “tragically, brutally and far too soon”.
Hediger’s sports careerThe athlete participated in the Beijing Games in women’s snowboard cross and the mixed team version of the same event.
She achieved her first two World Cup berths in the 2023-24 season. Her best result was second place in St. Moritz in January.
