Details: The head of the mountain rescue service in the Maramures county, Dan Benga, said that the rescuers arrived at the coordinates indicated by the Ukrainians on the night of December 24-25, but did not find them there. The search for them along the recommended route indicated by the rescuers also ended in nothing.
Direct speech: “The Ukrainians did something different than what they were asked, despite our instructions, even though they were told that any other option could have fatal consequences… After more than 12 hours of calling and searching the area where they were supposed to be, and due to the fact that the Ukrainians were not found, they did not report anything about their intentions and did not follow our instructions, the rescuers were forced to suspend the search and rescue operation and return to base”.
More detaily: He noted that if the group reported again, another team would go after them, and as the weather improved, a helicopter would fly over the search area, unless by then word came that the travelers had somehow descended.
“If they went down the Kryvyi River, instead of going up, as they were told, according to the coordinates where they would be safe, then there is very little chance that they are alive,” added the head of the rescue service department.
Weather conditions in Marmaros remain very difficult, with frost down to -11, deep snow and wind up to 80 km/h.
Prehistory:
- On December 24, Romanian rescuers received a request for help from three citizens of Ukraine, who are in one of the most difficult areas of the Romanian part of Marmaros.
- At the beginning of December, a 28-year-old Ukrainian was rescued from a mountain gorge in this area, who was fleeing mobilization with a several-month-old kitten.
