Details: On December 24, US President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of 37 out of 40 people sentenced to death, replacing the sentence with life imprisonment without the right to parole. Biden said the decision was in line with his moratorium on executions in cases not related to terrorism or mass murder.
Donald Trump criticized the decision, calling it “ridiculous” and insulting to the victims’ families.
“Joe Biden has just commuted the death sentences of 37 of the worst murderers in our country. The victims’ families are in despair. They can’t believe this is happening!” Trump said.
In a message on social media, Trump said he plans to direct the Department of Justice to enforce the death penalty after his inauguration.
Trump’s direct speech: “Immediately after my inauguration, I will direct the Department of Justice to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers and monsters.”
Details: During his 2017-2021 term as president, Trump reinstated the federal death penalty after a nearly 20-year hiatus.
Biden, who opposed the death penalty, suspended executions at the federal level after taking office in January 2021.
