On December 24, the inauguration ceremony of Maia Sandu as the President of Moldova took place in Chisinau.

In her inaugural speech, Sandu said she hoped her second and final four-year mandate would link her legacy to “Moldova’s stay in the European Union.”

During Sandu’s first term, Moldova received the status of a candidate for EU accession in 2022 and opened accession negotiations at the beginning of this year.

Last week, the European Union congratulated Moldova on the successful holding of presidential elections and a referendum on enshrining EU accession in the Constitution, while criticizing “hybrid attempts to undermine the country’s democratic institutions.”

The current pro-Western president of Moldova, Maya Sandu, defeated Russia-friendly candidate Oleksandr Stoianoglo in the second round of voting on November 3.

Elections in Moldova were accompanied by claims of Russian interference and falsification.

Moscow, without providing evidence, claims that the vote was unfair and refuses to recognize Sanda as the country’s legitimate president. International observers said that the elections were “efficient and professional”.
