The Student Parliament of the Institute of Journalism of KNU named after Taras Shevchenko was boycotted by the administration in connection with the speeches of teacher Nikita Vasylenko at pro-Russian platforms and his sexist remarks.
This is stated in a statement published in Telegram.
“In connection with the systematic speeches of the teacher of the Institute of Journalism of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Mykyta Kimovich Vasylenko, on pro-Russian platforms, sexist statements and the promotion of Russian narratives, the Student Parliament of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Journalism announces boycotts of the institute’s administration,” the message reads.
In particular, from December 23, 2024 until Vasylenko’s dismissal, the student parliament refuses to cooperate with the administration of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Journalism, and also demands a repeated response to the statement and protection of the academic community from the influence of persons who discredit the journalistic profession and the national interests of Ukraine.
“We emphasize that these are the minimum measures that we are forced to apply. If the administration continues to ignore the views of the students, we will be forced to take stronger action. We call on the university management not to delay the resolution of this issue and to ensure compliance with state values, academic standards and students’ rights,” the statement said.
As reported, on December 23, the Institute of Mass Information reported that Vasylenko said on the air of the Russian media politnavigator.net, access to which is blocked in Ukraine, that “the appearance of foreign troops in Ukraine will improve the demographic situation.” “Imagine: at least 40 thousand men with money, “hungry” for women. Those who did not pass the test of the front, brought up on good European food. And hundreds of thousands of “hungry” Ukrainian women who did not have time to leave for one reason or another, whose husbands died in the war or were maimed,” said Vasylenko. Vasylenko also cited the example of the Second World War, when Ukrainian territories were occupied by the Germans.
Mykyta Vasylenko is a Ukrainian journalist, teacher and writer. He is also a professor, doctor of philology, candidate of philosophical sciences. Specialist in informational genres. He has been teaching for 40 years at the Institute of Journalism, where he teaches investigative writing and reporting. He was a member of the Union of Left Forces party, which was banned as pro-Russian. He appeared on the channels of Viktor Medvedchuk and Yevgeny Murayev, which are currently under sanctions.
In February 2024, the permanent commission of the Academic Council of KNU named after Shevchenko created a working group for ethics issues to work out issues related to Vasylenko’s violation of pedagogical ethics and his discriminatory statements.
