Details: According to him, Russia occupied the territory of a neighboring country, sending a clear signal to the world that this is normal, and as a result of the negotiations, this territory will most likely remain in the hands of the Russian Federation for some time.
This, Merilo believes, is a message to other states, which may now think about the fact that they too have reasons to start a conflict over some old issue or to take something from their neighbor.
“This completely changes the entire security architecture in the world,” said the head of the Estonian Defense Forces.
“Russia will have a good excuse to try to achieve its strategic goals somewhere else, because it worked for Ukraine. What Russia pays for it in Ukraine – hundreds of thousands of dead, seriously wounded and the depletion of the economy – does not particularly concern it. It creates in the world a new strategic position, and it will be impossible to turn it back in the near future,” Merilo added.
He added that if the solution to the war in Ukraine is a frozen conflict, then in the eyes of many countries of the world, Russia will be the winner.
Prehistory:
- On December 19, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, emphasized that formats for ending the current phase of the war with Russia, which would amount to a “freezing” of hostilities, are unacceptable for Kyiv.
- At the same time, Zelensky expressed his readiness to agree to freeze the war with Russia, if only the controlled Ukrainian territory will be taken “under the umbrella of NATO”.
