On Monday, December 23, a protest was held in front of the Slovak government building in Bratislava in response to Prime Minister Robert Fico’s trip to Moscow, where he met with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
This was reported by the Slovak publication Aktuality.
The campaign “Enough of Russia” was organized by the public association Mir Ukraine. The organizers of the action said that Fico’s meeting with Putin strengthens Russian influence on the country and allows using the issue of gas transit to strengthen cooperation with Russia. The crowd chanted “Traitor!” addressed to the Slovak Prime Minister.
Former Prime Ministers of Slovakia Ihor Matovych and Eduard Geger, leaders of opposition parties, artists, and Ukrainian refugees took part in the protest.
Representatives of Mir Ukraine stated that Fitso could have broken the law with his trip, as he cooperates with the aggressor. They plan to file a complaint with the General Prosecutor’s Office of Slovakia.
After the protest ended, the crowd chanted “Enough Fitso” and “Glory to Ukraine”.
On December 22, Fico held a meeting in Moscow with Russian dictator Putin. The negotiations took place in the face-to-face format.
Fico explained that his visit was a response to the statement of President Volodymyr Zelensky, who opposed the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine, which allegedly harms Slovakia and endangers the production of electricity at the country’s nuclear power plants.
The agreement on the transit of Russian gas between Gazprom and Naftogaz through the territory of Ukraine expires on January 1, 2025.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that Fico does not want to participate in joint European work on energy independence from Russian gas. Instead, he receives discounts on the resource from the dictator Vladimir Putin, for which the aggressor country “paid by sovereignty or shadow schemes”.
