Details: Britain’s Ministry of Defense has announced that the military has successfully tested a weapon that can shoot down a swarm of drones using radio waves for the first time.
According to the British Ministry of Defense, the RFDEW can destroy a whole swarm of drones at a price “less than the cost of a pack of meat pies.”
RFDEW can detect, track and destroy a range of threats on land, in the air and at sea.
According to the British military, the RFDEW is capable of neutralizing targets up to 1km away with near-instant effect and at an estimated cost of 10p per shot, providing a cost-effective addition to traditional missile-based air defense systems.
This weapon is said to differ from laser-directed weapons such as the DragonFire in that it uses a radio frequency rather than a laser beam of light energy to destroy enemy threats.
RFDEW uses high-frequency waves to disable or damage critical electronic components inside devices such as drones, causing them to immobilize or fall from the sky.
Maria Eagle, minister for defense procurement and industry, called the successful firings with the RFDEW “another step forward in creating a potentially game-changing sovereign weapon for the UK”.
