The agency notes that the monthly number of launched drones is steadily increasing throughout 2024, and since July 2024 there has been a significant increase – by more than 200 UAVs – compared to the previous month.

The Ministry of Defense indicates that in September-November 2024, 50-60% of all launched Russian drones were “decoys”, which are of various types from the enemy. In particular, smaller and cheaper than “shahedy” are intended to “complicate Ukrainian defense efforts due to the saturation or confusion of the radar picture.” Also, their task is to force Ukrainian air defense to work harder in order to exhaust it.

Some of the “bait” carry a small amount of explosives – up to 5 kilograms. However, if they achieve their goal, they are dangerous.

The British Ministry of Defense noted that the rate of increase in launches of Russian attack UAVs from October to November decreased compared to previous months.

“Launch data for December 2024 suggests approximately 850 launches. However, it is likely that the weather affected December operations, as evidenced by some nights with significantly larger waves following a period of low or no activity,” it said.

Russia is still able to maintain the number of launches at the level of more than 1,500 per month, the department emphasizes. Russian UAVs can reach targets throughout Ukraine, and their strikes allow Russia to replenish its stockpile of long-range air missiles.

What is known about Russian decoy dronesEarlier, UNIAN reported that an inexpensive Gerbera drone appeared in Russia, which created a new problem for the Ukrainian air defense system. When neutralized by Ukrainian air defense systems, it not only depletes key military resources of Ukraine, but also provides intelligence to Russia.

Also, the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine talked about the Russian decoy drone “Parody”. This is one of the main decoy drones that the aggressor uses en masse in air attacks. Such drones fell on the territory of Moldova in November.

According to the military-political observer Oleksandr Kovalenko, the decoy drone “Parody” does not carry combat parts, it is assembled from “handy material”, which makes the cost of the product very low.
