The coalition government, which is expected to receive a parliamentary vote of confidence later on Monday, December 23, includes Čolaku’s Social Democrats, the center-right Liberals and the ethnic Hungarian UDMR party. Including minority representatives, the coalition has about 54% of seats in the legislature.
Recently, the country, which is a member of the EU and NATO, held three consecutive votes to elect a new president and parliament. The presidential election turned into trouble after a little-known far-right pro-Russian politician won the first round of elections on November 24. Against the backdrop of suspicions of Russian interference, the Supreme Court annulled the election results.
The new government will have to approve the calendar of new presidential elections in two rounds. The three parties in the coalition have agreed to back a single presidential candidate to prevent the far-right from winning. Their current candidate is Crin Antonescu, former leader of the Liberal Party.
