The reason for the large-scale cyberattack on the state registers of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine could be both phishing and bribery of employees who had access to these registers.
Oleksandr Fedienko, head of the subcommittee on cyber security, government communications, cryptographic protection of information of the Verkhovna Rada’s committee on national security, defense and intelligence, announced this, Radio Svoboda reports.
The attack carried out was well-prepared, and the login occurred from a top-level account, he explained.
For such an attack, the enemy could recruit an employee of the institution or use a multi-level mechanism of planting a flash drive so that it came to a person inside the perimeter and was turned on.
“There may be phishing of the computers of all employees who may be working with a closed circuit, remotely, which is prohibited in principle. Therefore, it is definitely not Vasya, Petya and anyone else. This is a clearly, coolly planned cyber attack that could have been carried out taking into account a sufficiently systematic organization,” Fedienko explained.
According to his information, the databases were saved, so the registers can be restored.
“If they have images (data archives) saved somewhere, that, I hope, is a good thing. This information was confirmed to me from closed sources, I think that in a week or two they will start to gradually recover,” Fedienko stressed.
We would like to remind you that due to the failure of some state registers, the service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are forced to suspend the provision of separate registration services for vehicles related to the change of ownership.
The largest cyber attack on the state registers of Ukraine was being prepared for several months, but the SBU said that they could not reveal the details of its preparation.
