The airport in Funchal, the capital of Madeira, said 33 flights had been canceled on Saturday. Two planes bound for Madeira had to land on the island of Porto Santo.
Forecasters predict that the strong gusts of wind that have engulfed the archipelago will continue until at least Sunday evening.
