The Kremlin is actively expanding programs aimed at popularizing military service among young people, in particular in the occupied territories of Ukraine. These measures are aimed at preparing for prolonged hostilities in Ukraine and potential armed conflicts with Western countries.

This is stated in the report of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) for December 21.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin continues to expand programs of the so-called military-patriotic education of young people both in Russia and in the occupied territories of Ukraine on the eve of the Kremlin’s announcement Defender of the Fatherland year”.

Putin approved a list of four tasks for the Russian government, which include:

  • creation and development of a network of so-called military sports camps” to attract young people to serve in the army;
  • program extension Roads of Victory”, launched by the Kremlin;
  • launching an online platform for organizing programs military and patriotic education”;
  • transfer of one of the children’s health camps” for year-round operation.

As ISW notes, the Kremlin initiative “Roads of Victory” is designed to form “patriotic feelings” in children and young people, organizing free excursions for them to Russian cultural and historical places, which are considered symbols battle glory”.

Analysts emphasize that Moscow has previously used the Avangard military and sports camps as a tool of militarization and propaganda among Ukrainian youth, spreading Russian cultural and historical narratives through them.

Analysts note that Russia is probably actively expanding the network of military sports camps throughout the country, implementing a long-term strategy of training future personnel for the armed forces.

In addition, the Kremlin plans to strengthen the activities and increase the importance of youth organizations such as Unarmy and the First Movement, which are used to militarize the younger generation.

The Putin regime also actively uses the Time of Heroes program to appoint so-called veterans of the war in Ukraine to government positions, contributing to the militarization of Russian society.

Analysts of the Institute for the Study of War believe that the Kremlin plans to involve military-political organizations to increase the prestige of service in the army among Russian youth and society. According to their estimates, this is part of Moscow’s plans for prolonged military operations in Ukraine and preparations for possible conflicts with Western countries.
