A joint meeting of the Interagency Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict and the UN Task Force on Monitoring and Reporting was held in Kyiv, during which gross violations of children’s rights in the context of full-scale Russian aggression were discussed. The event was held within the framework of the initiative of the President of Ukraine Bring Kids Back UA and the CAAS (Children and Armed Conflicts) mechanism in Ukraine.

During the meeting, updated data on gross violations of children’s rights were presented. During this year, as a result of Russian aggression against Ukraine, children living in Kharkiv Oblast, Donetsk Oblast and Dnipro Oblast suffered the most. Also, it was in these regions that educational institutions suffered the greatest damage. Particular attention was paid to the crimes of the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territories.

Daria Gerasymchuk, the adviser to the President of Ukraine on child rights and child rehabilitation, emphasized that Ukrainian children in TOT do not have access to quality education and the satisfaction of basic needs.

“It is important that all these crimes be recorded, verified and certified in order to bring the perpetrators to justice. At the same time, we strive to spread our experience of protecting children so that no child in the world suffers as Ukrainian children do,” she said.

The coordinator of the UN system, Matias Shmale, noted that Ukraine’s work within the framework of the joint preventive plan of the Ukrainian government and the UN task force on monitoring and reporting is an example for many countries.

The participants of the meeting emphasized that it is important to document all cases of gross violations against children in order to be able to bring the Russian Federation to justice. Particular attention was paid to the mechanisms of reintegration of children and the implementation of programs to prevent similar crimes against children in the future.

“We appreciate the close cooperation with the Interagency Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict to strengthen support in preventing gross violations and protecting children in Ukraine,” concluded the head of the UNICEF Delegation, Munir Mammadzadeh.
