An explosion occurred in Murmansk near the base of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Federation – Kovalenko

In Murmansk, Russia, there was an explosion near the base of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Federation, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, reported on December 19.

“This base provides the Russian Federation with the ability to control Arctic sea lanes and access to the Arctic Ocean. It supports both surface ships and nuclear submarines,” the post states.

According to Kovalenko, command centers, ammunition depots, repair docks and fleet control points are located in Murmansk. There is also testing, in particular, of Zircon missiles.

“The ships of the Northern Fleet are carriers of Kalibr missiles, which Russia launches on the territory of Ukraine during the war. The Northern Fleet of the Russian Federation also carries out reconnaissance and countermeasures against NATO forces with an eye on the Arctic,” says the head of the CPD.

The direct distance from Murmansk to Ukraine is approximately 2,000 kilometers.

Earlier, the Russian media wrote that two explosions took place in Murmansk on the evening of December 18 and published a recording from a surveillance camera showing the moment of one of the explosions.

The authorities of the Murmansk region of the Russian Federation did not comment on the information about the explosions.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian regions have regularly come under shelling and drone attacks. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reports on downed missiles and drones over the territory of Russia. Kyiv mostly does not comment on these reports.
