President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine is not considering renewing the agreement with Gazprom on the transit of Russian gas to Europe, and also made it clear that Kyiv will not agree to pump Russian gas under the guise of Azerbaijani gas.
He said this during a conversation with the media in Brussels.
Zelensky was asked whether it is possible that Ukraine will change its decision and renew the transit agreement with Russia’s Gazprom, which expires on January 1, 2025, to which he replied that it is not possible.
“We will not continue the transit of Russian gas. We will not allow the opportunity to earn additional billions on our blood. And any country in the world that can get something cheap from Russia will eventually become dependent on the Russian Federation – it’s just a matter of a month or a year. Because this is their policy. That is why we will not transit Russian gas,” Zelensky emphasized.
He noted that he spoke about this in particular with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, and outlined Ukraine’s position regarding the potential transit of Azerbaijani gas to Europe – although he did not directly mention what he was saying about Azerbaijan.
“I clearly explained to him: if it is gas not from Russia, but from another country… But we don’t want to play the game when this other country receives gas from Russia, then transits its gas. This is the same as continuing to make money from this war and continuing to transfer money to Russia. If a European country wants to receive gas and not pay this money to Russia until the end of the war, you can think… But again, we will not give the Russian Federation the opportunity to make additional earnings during this war,” the president emphasized.

Deputy Secretary of State Jeffrey Payette said that the US hopes that the end of the contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine will be a powerful step towards ending the era of dependence of Europe on Russian energy resources.
