The Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Czech Parliament, approved in the third reading the collection of laws Lex Ukraine VII, which allows to extend the temporary protection of asylum seekers from Ukraine for one year. At the same time, there is thinking about what to do after the end of hostilities. This is reported by Ukrinform. The law is renewed every year, the current one expires on the last day of March. “The law is valid until March 31, 2025, but at the same time, electronic registration of those Ukrainians still living in our country must take place by mid-March. And here it is also in the interests of the security of all of us, that the registration should be done correctly, so that only those who live here really have the right to any support and help from the Czech state,” said the Minister of the Interior Vit Rakušan in his speech at the meeting, urging deputies to adopt the document by the end of the year. Advertisement: He expects that the Senate will be able to discuss the law at one of the first meetings in January, after which it must be signed by the president. Ukrainians who have a stable job in the Czech Republic and do not receive state assistance will have the right to apply for a special long-term residence permit and after five years – to apply for a permanent residence permit. Rakushan also touched on the issue of plans for the period after the end of hostilities in Ukraine. Advertisement: “When there is a ceasefire or the end of the war, at that moment the provision of temporary protection should end, from this moment we will not provide temporary protection,” the minister explained. These plans are being discussed with Poland, which will hold the EU Council presidency from the beginning of next year. Currently, there are about 380,000 war refugees from Ukraine in the Czech Republic. No increase in the number of Ukrainians before winter was recorded. The European Union adopted a decision on temporary protection for Ukrainians, which is valid until the end of March 2026. We will remind: The number of Poles who are in favor of accepting Ukrainian refugees has fallen to 53%, which is the lowest figure since February 2022, when 94% of respondents said they support accepting refugees.
