Details: Orban was asked if he would present Zelensky with a plan for a Christmas truce. The Prime Minister replied that it was already on the table, and that it would either be accepted or not.
When asked whether he will hold talks with the Ukrainian president on December 19, he answered: “I work in standby mode and sleep in standby mode. I am always ready for any meaningful discussion.”
Prehistory:
- Orban said that he will not respond to provocations, commenting on the statement of President Volodymyr Zelensky, who criticized the Hungarian Prime Minister for his attempts at “mediation”, stressing that he has no leverage over the aggressor state.
- The tense relationship between Kyiv and Budapest escalated after Viktor Orbán called Vladimir Putin last week.
- Afterward, Orbán said he had offered Ukraine a Christmas ceasefire and a large-scale exchange of prisoners of war, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyi allegedly rejected the idea.
- Then the Ukrainian president expressed hope that Orban “will not at least call Assad in Moscow to listen to his one-hour lectures.”
- The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Sijarto, said that Kyiv refused the phone conversation between Orban and Zelensky regarding the Hungarian “truce” proposal, and was also indignant that almost no one in the EU supported the “Christmas truce”.
