Obozrevatel editor-in-chief Orest Sohar writes about this in his Telegram channel.

He noted that in fact Orbán continues to bend the Kremlin line on the need for negotiations. Sohar added that Orbán gained political weight, because he became Putin’s confidant and Trump’s most loyal ally in Europe.

“Orban, in fact, is trying to repackage the Kremlin’s “peace plan” in a new wrapper, in which it can be pushed to the rest of Europe. The logic is based on Putin’s Botox and traditional Russian brainwashing: to deprive Ukraine of military and financial support, and then pull Kiev on the head of the ultimatum of surrender,” writes Sohar.

He noted that Trump is currently not ready for the scenario that Orbán is promoting. After all, the newly elected US president wants to conclude a favorable agreement regarding Ukraine.

“That is why Trump’s team does not announce the contours of the future agreement, and does not generate any initiatives of its own, instead monitoring the controversial wishes of interested players: from Kyiv to Moscow, from Brussels to Beijing, and, not surprisingly, from Budapest to Ankara What is important is not the rationality or fairness of the proposals, but the political weight of its bearer,” added Sohar.

According to him, Orbán is currently trying to bluff, hoping that his “peace initiative” will become as important in Trump’s eyes as Europe’s position will be weak.

“I would like to believe that Trump learned the lessons of his first presidency, when his administration concluded a cease-fire agreement with the Taliban and a political understanding between the official government and the Taliban. However, the militants used this “peace plan” as a stepping stone to seize power in the country. The same may repeat itself in the case of Trump’s “Orbanization”: the sudden termination of funding to Ukraine will not lead to peace, but rather the opposite – it will stimulate Russian aggression,” concludes Sohar.

“Peace initiatives” of OrbanAfter the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections in the USA, the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, began to more actively promote his vision for the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war. In particular, he recently boasted that he “opened the door” to peace talks between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

In addition, the day before, Orban accused Zelensky that the president of Ukraine rejected his proposal for a Christmas truce and a large exchange of prisoners.

Presidential adviser Dmytro Lytvyn reacted to this message. He noted that Ukraine did not authorize Hungary to take any actions, Hungary did not warn about contacts with Moscow.
