Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga requested additional military support to Australia. He stated this on December 18 at a joint briefing with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia Penny Wong, who is on a visit to Kyiv, Radio Svoboda correspondent reports.

Sybiga noted that the situation on the battlefield remains very difficult, and the Ukrainian military needs strengthening.

“I have requested additional military support, including the famous Australian Bushmasters and other weapons. We will also offer to take into account Ukraine’s needs when decommissioning the military equipment that is in service with the Australian Defense Forces,” said Andriy Sybiga.

Wong, in turn, said she had “heard requests for further assistance” and would take them back to Australia for further consideration.

The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also thanked for the military assistance already provided by Australia, “in particular, the recent provision of 49 Abrams tanks and 14 boats.”

In total, according to Sybiga, Australia provided more than $1 billion in aid, of which $880 million was military aid.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also reported that Australia will transfer $6.39 million to the Energy Support Fund of Ukraine.

The country also allocates 50 million euros to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. At the briefing, Wong noted that the donation will help Ukraine access about $400 million in additional funding over the next 10 years for reconstruction.

“As for energy, today I visited the Trypil TPP, an object that has become a target for Russia. And we understand that it’s winter, and this is Russia’s attack on the morale of the Ukrainian people, that’s why energy is so important,” said Wong.

According to Sibiga, Penny Wong’s visit was the first bilateral visit by the Australian head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 10 years.
