Russia’s losses in the war in Ukraine — what is known

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga stated at the UN Security Council meeting on November 19 that Russia loses about 1.5 thousand soldiers killed and wounded in Ukraine every day. In ten days, these losses, according to him, are equal to those that the USSR suffered in ten years of war in Afghanistan.

On November 28, Forbes reported that the approximate average lifespan of a Russian recruit in the armed forces of the Russian Federation after signing the contract is one month.

According to ISW, during the period of intense offensive operations of the Russian Federation in September, October and November 2024, the Russians lost about 125,800 people killed and wounded in exchange for 2,356 square kilometers of territory captured by the occupying forces.

The Ministry of Defense of Great Britain, citing intelligence data, reported that in November 2024, the average daily losses of Russians in the war against Ukraine reached a new monthly maximum of 1,523 people.

On December 8, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the total number of Russian casualties exceeded 750,000 people, including 198,000 dead and more than 550,000 wounded.

On December 13, Russian journalists confirmed by name the deaths of 83,338 Russian soldiers since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. The largest number of confirmed casualties was recorded in Bashkortostan — 3,487 people. 40% of them went to the front as volunteers.
