German Chancellor Olaf Scholz refused to supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine and believes that this position is also shared by the future US President Donald Trump.
This is reported by Spiegel.
Scholz said that it would be a “wrong decision” for him to supply weapons that could be used to strike deep into Russian territory.
“If I understand it correctly, it will be evaluated in the same way in the future, for example, in transatlantic cooperation. At least, that’s what I read in President Trump’s latest interviews,” Scholz said.
Trump previously condemned the decision of current US President Joe Biden, who allowed Ukraine to attack Russian territory with the help of long-range Western weapons. He called Biden’s decision “a big mistake” and did not rule out that his decision after taking office at the end of January.
The issue of the transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine
After the USA allowed Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles for strikes on military facilities in Russia, discussions about the possible supply of long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine were again intensified in Germany.
On November 16, the leader of the Free Democratic Party (Christian Dürr of the German Democratic Party (VDP) said that the issue of the supply of Taurus missiles to Ukraine can be put to a vote in the Bundestag.
On November 18, Minister of Economy and Vice-Chancellor of Germany, chancellor candidate from the Soyuz-90/Green Party, Robert Habek promised to supply Ukraine with Taurus missiles if he is elected instead of the current Chancellor, Olaf Scholz.
On the same day, the deputy press secretary of the German government, Wolfgang Buchner, reported that Scholz’s position on the issue of the transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine remains unchanged even after the USA allowed Kyiv to launch long-range ATACMS missiles deep into the Russian Federation.
According to the results of a survey conducted by Infratest dimap for the ARD TV channel, the majority of Germans do not support the transfer of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.
On December 10, the candidate for German chancellorship and the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Friedrich Merz said that he would supply Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles only after consultations with the United States.
