At its meeting on December 17, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) adopted the resolution “Situation with human rights in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.”

81 countries voted “for” the document, 14 “against” and 80 “abstained”.

Belarus, China, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mali, Nicaragua, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Zimbabwe did not support the resolution.

According to the representative of Ukraine at the UN, Serhiy Kysylytsia, this resolution aims to focus the attention of the General Assembly on “the difficult situation with human rights and to ensure basic protection for those who suffer especially.” In particular, Kyslytsia mentioned the thousands of Ukrainian children deported to Russia.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga thanked the UN General Assembly for adopting the resolution. He noted that this year’s document pays special attention to the brutal treatment and torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russia and the need to return forcibly deported Ukrainian children.

The resolution on human rights in Crimea has been adopted annually since 2016 with certain additions.

Previously, the permanent representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Tamila Tasheva, reported that more than a thousand facts of persecution for peaceful resistance to the occupation in Crimea were recorded after the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian army into Ukraine.

In 2020, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres published three reports on human rights violations in Crimea. The last of them, in particular, refers to torture and ill-treatment by FSB officers, impunity for people involved in the enforced disappearance of people, interference in the professional activities of journalists, forced relocation and deportation of the population from Crimea, etc.
