The European Atomic Energy Association (NuclearEurope) considers the completion of power units No. 3 and No. 4 of the Khmelnytskyi NPP useful for Ukraine and the EU.
This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to a letter from the Association’s general director to the head of the Verkhovna Rada’s specialized committee on energy and housing and communal services.
“We consider this project useful not only for Ukraine, but also for EU countries and the business community. Adoption of this draft law will promote the development of the civil nuclear industry and support the ambitious goal of tripling global nuclear energy production, which was announced at the COP-28 conference,” the letter states.
European companies have already expressed interest in participating in the project as potential suppliers and subcontractors, NuclearEurope assured.
“The adoption of the draft law (on the completion of units No. 3 and No. 4 of the Khmelnytsky NPP – ed.) will allow the rapid implementation of the project and will significantly contribute to the recovery of the energy sector of Ukraine after the war,” the letter of the European association states.
NuclearEurope is the Brussels-based nuclear power trade association in Europe. NuclearEurope’s members are 15 national nuclear associations representing about 3,000 companies.
It will be recalled that on December 17, the Verkhovna Rada planned to consider a draft law on the completion of power units of the Khmelnytsky NPP at the expense of Western donors. The document was developed without consultation with the EU and contained corruption risks, and it was withdrawn from consideration.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is ready to provide support to Ukraine in the implementation of the project to upgrade power units No. 3 and No. 4 of the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant.
