US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that the possible introduction of North Korean troops into Ukraine to participate in hostilities would be viewed by the United States as an escalation of the conflict.
This is reported by Ukrinform.
Miller commented on reports of North Korean military deaths, noting that North Korean soldiers stationed in the Kursk region are “legitimate targets” because they are participating in the war and could be attacked by Ukrainian forces as combatants. He also added that the US knows about the death of a part of the North Korean military on the battlefield in the Kursk region.
“And if they cross the border with Ukraine, it will be considered an additional escalation by the Russian government, as well as by the North Korean government,” the spokesperson of the US State Department emphasized.
Earlier, the representative of the US Ministry of Defense, General Patrick Ryder, said that soldiers from the DPRK could have died in the Kursk region.

Losses of North Korean troops in the Kursk region – what is known
On December 14, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that the North Korean troops, which Russia began to use in assaults in the Kursk region since November 2024, have already suffered their first losses as a result of successful attacks by the Defense Forces.
On December 15, the commander of the air reconnaissance unit, Robert Brovdi, with the call sign Magyar, published a video on his Telegram channel, in which, according to him, you can see the bodies of 22 people killed in the Kursk region during the December 14 assault by North Korean and Russian troops.
Journalists of the Radio Liberty Schema project published pictures obtained from sources among military personnel in the Kursk direction, which show several dozen bodies against the background of broken equipment.
Sources claim that these images show the results of several assaults, and among the dead are soldiers from North Korea. However, journalists were not immediately able to check the pictures independently.
A December 15 report by the Institute for the Study of War confirmed that North Korean regime forces faced difficulties caused by heavy losses in battles against the Ukrainian Defense Forces and a language barrier.
