Details: According to the representative of the Police and Border Guard of Estonia from the border town of Narva, Eerik Purgel, they are trying to import very different sanctioned goods into Russia through the border crossing. Attempts to export cash to the Russian Federation also remain a serious problem.

Purgel’s direct speech: “We still see tens of thousands of euros a day trying to get to Russia in people’s luggage.”

He added that in addition to drones, microcircuits and all kinds of electronics, Starlink satellite communication systems are also transported across the border.

Purgel believes that strict checks on passengers crossing the border are “very justified”. They act as a deterrent.

Prehistory:

  • On August 8, Estonia introduced stricter checks at the checkpoints in Narva, Koidula and Luhamaa. They replaced previous random checks based on risk assessment.
  • Since then, long queues have formed on Petri Square in front of the border station at the checkpoint in Narva, where about 1,600 people cross the border every day.
  • Estonia decided to check the luggage of all travelers due to the massive number of attempts to violate the ban on the transportation of sanctioned goods. Since Finland’s land border with the Russian Federation has been closed for almost a year, Russians traveling from or to the countries of Northern Europe also pass through Estonia.
  • Since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the EU has imposed 14 sanctions packages against Russia, many of which contain trade restrictions. Another package should appear soon – EU countries agreed on it this month.
