The Secretary General of the Alliance emphasizes that Ukraine does not need ideas about the peace process, because it needs more weapons.
As the UNIAN correspondent reports, Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte said this at a briefing before the start of a two-day meeting of foreign ministers of NATO member countries in Brussels. In particular, the Secretary General of the Alliance was asked whether the issue of Ukraine’s quick invitation to NATO membership will be resolved at this December meeting.
“As you know, the allies agreed that the future of Ukraine lies in NATO. During the summit in Washington, we agreed that the path to NATO will be irreversible,” Rutte said.
At the same time, according to him, before the July summit in Washington and after it, the allies worked and continue to work on “building a bridge” on Ukraine’s path to membership. In particular, the conclusion of bilateral security agreements between Ukraine and certain allies is part of these efforts, as well as the implementation of all the decisions of the Washington Summit.
“So, it is happening step by step. But, I think we should focus… in the next two days we will focus on what is very necessary now. And now it is necessary to ensure that military aid goes to Ukraine,” he emphasized Rutte
He said that now military support is crucial for Ukraine. In particular, according to him, this is important, because if one day Kyiv decides to start negotiations with Moscow, then it should take place from the position of strength of Ukraine.
At the same time, Rutte was asked about the idea of placing European forces on the territory of Ukraine, which the Western media wrote about after the victory of Donald Trump in the US presidential elections.
The Secretary General of NATO once again noted that the ministerial meeting on December 3-4 will focus on finding opportunities for Ukraine to negotiate with Russia from a position of strength when it decides to go to these negotiations.
“And in order to reach that point, it is extremely important that more military aid be delivered to Ukraine,” Rütte emphasized.
According to him, it depends only on Ukraine when to start negotiations with Russia.
“We want them to do it from a position of strength,” Rutte added.
The Secretary General of the Alliance added that he would not comment on every report in the media regarding the peace proposals. At the same time, as Rütte is convinced, Ukraine does not need more ideas of what the peace process should look like.
“I would say that we need more military aid and less discussion about what the peace process might look like,” Rütte emphasized.
In this regard, NATO foreign ministers will consider how to deliver more military aid to Ukraine.
Ukraine’s entry into NATOAs UNIAN reported, on December 1, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that the USA, Germany and Hungary remain skeptical about the possibility of inviting Ukraine to become a member of NATO. At the same time, according to the head of state, there is no risk in the fact that the heads of foreign affairs of NATO member countries recommend inviting Ukraine to NATO at the meeting on December 3-4.
At the same time, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine will never recognize the Russian occupation of Ukrainian territories and will not agree to NATO membership only for part of the territory. Ukraine’s invitation to NATO should cover the entire territory of Ukraine in accordance with the internationally recognized borders of 1991.
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Budapest Memorandum, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine emphasized that the only real guarantee of security for Ukraine, as well as a deterrent factor for further Russian aggression against Ukraine and other states, is only our country’s full membership in NATO. Ukraine will not accept any substitutes for full NATO membership.
