Neuralink plans to conduct trials to determine whether its brain-implanted chip can help patients control prosthetic robotic arms.

In 2023, Elon Musk called one of Neuralink’s goals to restore full-body movement for people with spinal cord injuries, paralysis of all four limbs, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

“If Neuralink is combined with Optimus robot limbs, Luke Skywalker’s solution could become a reality,” Musk wrote in X, referring to the Star Wars character’s robotic arm.

Now his company is approaching the realization of the idea. Neuralink aims to embed its brain chip into robotic limbs.

“This is an important first step towards restoring not only digital, but also physical freedom. More information will be provided later,” the company said in a statement to X.

Elon Musk’s company continues to test its brain-implanted device to help paralyzed patients control digital gadgets with thought. Trials of the company’s brain chips are expected to continue until 2031.

As of August 2024, the company has implanted the chip in two patients. The first was Noland Arbo from Arizona. The chipped man is completely paralyzed from a spinal cord injury. Thanks to the chip, he was able to use a PC and even play video games. At the same time, he faced the problem of disconnecting the device, which significantly reduced its effectiveness.

Musk previously informed that by the end of the year a high single digit number” of patients will receive the chips. He did not specify the number of patients involved, and when and where the operations will be performed. People with various diseases that caused paralysis of all four limbs, aged from 22 to 75 years, could apply for transplantation.
