Probably produced by 2019: British intelligence analyzed the Russian Oreshnik missile

The Oreshnik missile, which was used to strike the Dnipro, was probably manufactured before 2019, when the Russian Federation withdrew from the Treaty on the Elimination of Medium- and Short-Range Missiles. As British intelligence reminds, on November 21, for the first time in history, Russia used a medium-range ballistic missile codenamed “Oreshnik” against the Ukrainian plant in Dnipro.

The missile is classified as having a maximum range of 3,000-5,500 km. In this case, the missile traveled only a little more than 800 km to its target. In February 2019, Russia announced its withdrawal from the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles, which prohibited the development and production of anti-missile defense systems. According to intelligence, the combat load of the missile was recorded in the form of six groups of six warheads, a total of 36 submunitions. These submunitions travel at hypersonic speeds (over Mach 5) before impact, which is typical of missiles of this class. All BRSD and ICBM warheads will travel at hypersonic speed upon entering the atmosphere.

The use of this experimental system against Ukraine was almost certainly intended as a strategic message following Ukraine’s use of Western missiles against Russia. Most likely, Russia has only a few Oreshnik missiles, which have not yet been put into mass production.
