The Minister of Strategic Industries Herman Smetanin, commenting on the issue of low-quality mines at the front, said that several hundred projectiles had been selected for analysis. The mine quality inspection commission, which began its work on November 8, found four main deficiencies.
According to the correspondent of Radio Svoboda, the minister noted that among the identified problems: inconsistency in the geometric parameters of the mine, powder gases that came out between the mortar barrel and the mine, unreliable operation of the detonator capsule and non-condensation of the powders.
Verkhovna Rada deputy from the “Servant of the People” faction Fedir Venislavskyi, commenting on the situation, noted that this shortage is not critical for the Defense Forces.
Minister Smetanin added that after the inspection, the mines will be returned to the enterprise that produced them. If the mine meets the standards, then only the powder charge should be replaced. In particular, he noted that about 24,000 mines from a batch of 54,000 are subject to inspection.
The Minister also clarified that there were no problems with the use of mines in the summer, and there should not have been any difficulties in the winter, as the gunpowder had been tested and approved for use. However, during use, malfunctions of propellant charges at negative temperatures were detected. The commission is currently investigating the reason for this.
It was previously reported that the Ministry of Defense has been actively investigating the causes of the abnormal activation of 120 mm mines for several weeks. The use of the batch of ammunition in the Armed Forces was suspended, the mines were removed for research.
