The lawsuit alleges that the city and jail negligently failed to provide Weinstein with “timely and adequate” medical treatment and the satisfaction of his “basic human needs,” including clean clothing and “sanitary living conditions.”
According to the document, Weinstein has chronic myeloid leukemia, diabetes, coronary heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea, obesity and high blood pressure. He was hospitalized in April and July and had emergency heart surgery in September.
In a statement, Weinstein’s lawyer compared Rikers to a Gulag where “inmates are treated like animals.”
When I last visited him, I saw blood splatters on his prison clothes, perhaps from drips, clothes that had not been washed for weeks… – these can hardly be called sanitary conditions for a person with serious diseases,
A spokesperson for New York’s mayor’s office responded that the public hospital system is working with the Department of Corrections to “ensure that people in custody have access to high-quality health care at Rikers Island, including those with complex medical and psychiatric needs.”
The former film producer’s lawyers are seeking $5 million in damages.
We will remind
