In the Kirovohrad region, the Security Service of Ukraine successfully thwarted plans for a large-scale sabotage organized by the FSB. During the special operation, a Russian agent was detained who tried to set fire to an electrical substation that supplies energy to the military airfield and other strategic facilities in the region.
This was reported by the SBU press service.
The detainee turned out to be a 21-year-old local resident who was recruited remotely by the FSB in August 2024. The occupiers drew attention to him through pro-Kremlin comments in Telegram channels.
At the initial stage, the recruited agent performed “verification” tasks – collected information about the state of energy facilities, the location of military hospitals and buildings of territorial procurement centers. He transferred all the data to the Russian curators via messengers in the form of texts and marks on Google maps.
Later, the man received a new task – to set fire to a key power station in the region using a highly flammable mixture, after which he had to record the fire on video. For the successful execution of this act of sabotage, he was promised a monetary reward – 200,000 Russian rubles (75,000 hryvnias).
SBU employees exposed the agent in advance, documented his activities and detained him “red-handed” while preparing for the sabotage. At the same time, measures were taken to protect other strategic objects that were in the attacker’s zone of interest.
The phone with the chat rooms through which he communicated with the FSB was seized from the detainee and he was informed of the suspicion under part. 2 Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason under martial law).
The perpetrator is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Earlier, the Counterintelligence of the Security Service detained two more agents of the Russian military intelligence (better known as the GRU), who were preparing missile and drone strikes by Russians in the northern regions of Ukraine.
According to the evidence base of the Security Service, an agent of the FSB of Russia, who operated in Zaporizhzhya under the operational pseudonym “007”, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
