The Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company (UDP) successfully defended its property in the center of Vienna against Russian attempts to take it away. The court in the capital of Austria made a decision in favor of the Ukrainian side, said Dmytro Moskalenko, director general of the UDP.

Moskalenko noted that this decision is historic, because for the first time Russia received a court refusal regarding such property. He called it a significant victory that demonstrates Ukraine’s determination to defend its rights.

In 1975, the USSR Embassy in Austria purchased a building and a plot of land in the center of Vienna, the funds for which were provided by the UDP. Later, the Main Shipping Agency in Austria was located there. After Ukraine gained independence, this property remained under the control of the UDP, although it was formally considered the property of the USSR.

In 2008, Russia changed the formal owner of the building from the USSR to itself, declaring that it is the sole legal successor of the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian side lost a number of court cases, but since 2022, the UDP intensified the fight, attracting a new team.

According to Moskalenko, the property in the center of Vienna is valued at tens of millions of euros. The court decision also became the first precedent when a European court recognized Ukraine as a co-owner of foreign property. This opens up prospects for the protection of other objects located abroad, which are in the process of being returned to the control of Ukraine.

It will be recalled that the Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company built already the second large-tonnage SLG barge using old lantern ships (small forty-meter barges), and the first one was launched at the end of last year.

The Ministry of Development of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure reported on the construction and launching of the third SLG barge of the Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company.
