“Ukraine confirms that there are no obstacles for Polish state institutions and private individuals to cooperate with relevant Ukrainian institutions to carry out search and exhumation works on the territory of Ukraine in accordance with Ukrainian legislation, and declares its readiness to positively consider applications in these matters” – emphasized Sikorsky.

In turn, Sybiga said that both Kyiv and Warsaw are interested in eliminating misunderstandings on historical issues.

“Every family has the right to honor the memory of their ancestors in a dignified manner, and within the framework of a joint Ukrainian-Polish working group under the auspices of the ministries of culture of both countries, we are working on practical mechanisms for carrying out search and exhumation work,” the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry assured.

The subject of the events in Volyn in 1943-1945, which in Ukrainian historiography is called the Volyn tragedy, and in Polish – the Volyn massacre, remains a stumbling block in bilateral relations.

In Warsaw, they said that the resolution of historical disputes will be one of the mandatory conditions for Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance announced that it plans to include the search and exhumation of the remains of Poles in the Rivne region in 2025, responding to relevant requests from Polish citizens.
