Lithuania’s ambassador to NATO: France will not need the alliance’s consent to send troops to Ukraine

Lithuania supports France’s idea of possibly sending Western troops to Ukraine, and if France decides to do so, it does not need NATO’s permission, Lithuanian Ambassador to NATO Davidas Matulonis said in a comment to Radio Svoboda.

“These can be national decisions, a group of countries, a coalition that wants to join this initiative. It is not necessary to have NATO’s approval or mark,” Matoulonis explained.

At the same time, according to the ambassador, it is currently “just an idea” and different countries have different positions on it.

“This is a consistent French position. We have always had a positive attitude towards this,” the ambassador noted.

Matoulonis suggested that such a discussion could be raised by NATO foreign ministers at a meeting in Brussels next week:

“First of all, the process of training the troops depends on them, and perhaps some countries will join sooner or later.”

Earlier, the French publication Le Monde, citing sources, reported that some Western countries are again discussing the possibility of sending their troops or private military companies to Ukraine.

Later, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tagnani said that his country would not send its soldiers to war in Ukraine. And Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said that he does not think it is a good idea to send a contingent of Western troops to Ukraine, as the risks of such actions far outweigh the benefits.
