“I’ll be sure to show them my new stationery that unequivocally pronounces Maxine Dellacorte,” Kristen Wiig declares on the Emmy-nominated, 1969-set dramedy Palm Royale. To button her point, she asks Ricky Martin’s character, “Tell me, do you even have stationery, Robert?”
Bespoke notecards and letterhead have long been a sign of making it. Taylor Swift recently penned a thank-you note to Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who shared the superstar’s card bearing the words “From the Desk of Taylor Swift, Songwriter/Feline Enthusiast.” And according to Wanda Wan of stationery store Soolip, “young actors” have become her best customers of late.
“Stationery is the first step in someone branding themselves,” says Wan, who has counted Jennifer Aniston, Janet Jackson and Katie Holmes among her clients since launching Soolip in 1995. “I [recently] got a call from Chris Pine’s assistant saying he wanted full letter-sized stationery on the best handmade paper that we had,” says Wan, who moved Soolip’s long-celebrated West Hollywood storefront to Westlake Village in 2022. “[Chris] wanted to write more and do less communication over email.”
While Sugar Paper’s Allie Adishian noted they have a handful of young custom clients, stationery designer Jonathan Wright says he’s seen an increased interest in greeting cards among twenty-somethings. “I wonder at times if younger generations see physically writing a note and sending it via snail mail as a cool vintage novelty.”
Jaymee Harney, founder of Jaymes Paper, says she actively courts young influencers on Instagram in hopes of inspiring a newfangled love of letter writing. Harney says influencers are “always very excited to receive our cards as they aspire to become a ‘handwritten note girly.’ They appreciate the subtle/blind deboss/emboss styles most.”
Stationery aside, Wan also creates influencer gifting boxes for brands and celebrities including musician Shawn Mendes as well as burgeoning brother-sister pop-soul band Lawrence.
But Wan’s true passion is paper.
“Letter writing is the physical manifestation of one’s heart,” she says, sharing that Soolip also offers workshops and yoga retreats that incorporate calligraphy, journal making, and bookbinding via soolip.com. “It’s an opportunity to slow down and to be more thoughtful.”
