According to preliminary data, in November 2024, the Russian occupiers stormed the positions of the Defense Forces of Ukraine near the village of Petrivka, Pokrovsky District. As a result of the attack, five soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were forced to retreat and hide in a private house. After surrounding the residence, the Russian military took the Ukrainian defenders prisoner. They were forced to leave their shelter unarmed and lie down on the ground. Under the procedural leadership of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a pre-trial investigation was started in criminal proceedings for the commission of a war crime combined with intentional murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Currently, investigative actions are underway to establish all the circumstances of the crime and the persons involved in its commission.
The killing of prisoners of war is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and qualifies as a grave international crime, the Prosecutor General’s Office reminded.
