American researchers have found, based on satellite images, that North Korea is significantly expanding a key plant for the production of ballistic missiles that Russia is using in its war against Ukraine.

Reuters writes about it.

An object known as a plant February 11,” is part of the Ryongsong machine-building complex in the city of Hamkhin on the east coast of North Korea. This is the only known manufacturer of solid-fuel ballistic missiles of the Hwasong-11 type, which in the West are called KN-23.

Satellite images of the plant, taken by Planet Labs in early October, were examined by American experts from the James Martin Center for Nuclear Non-Proliferation Research (CNS). The pictures show the construction of a new collection building, which is much larger than the previous one, as well as a new housing facility for employees. In addition, the entrances to the underground premises of the complex are being modernized.

According to CNS researcher Sam Lair, the new assembly building is about 60-70% larger than the previous one, which may indicate intentions to significantly increase the plant’s production capacity. Access restrictions to the tunnels, which were previously blocked by the overhead crane, were also lifted.

We see this as a sign that they are significantly increasing or intending to increase production at the plant,” Lair noted.

Another CNS researcher, Michael Duitzman, suggests that the new structure captured in satellite images may be a warehouse, but is most likely a new missile assembly line.

South Korean researchers from the company SI Analytics, which specializes in analyzing satellite images, also confirmed the fact of new construction on the territory of the plant.
