The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported on the situation in key areas of the front, in particular, Kurakhivskyi, where the situation is the most difficult, and Zaporizhia, where there are threats, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said.

“Report of the head of the Syrskyi Committee. Long conversation, all key areas. First of all, Donetsk region. The Kurakhiv direction is the most difficult now. We are working to strengthen our positions. Zaporizhzhia direction – we see existing threats, our Defense Forces of Ukraine are controlling the situation,” Zelenskyy wrote in a telegram.

In addition, according to him, it was about the Kursk operation. “Our soldiers are defending positions and inflicting very significant losses on the Russian army. Our task is to destroy the Russian potential in the border areas as much as possible,” the president added.

In their report released on November 24, analysts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted that the Russian military in Donbas has recently been advancing much faster than in the whole of 2023.

“The front line in the Donetsk region is becoming more and more volatile, as recently Russian troops have been advancing much faster than during the entire year of 2023,” the experts point out.

According to their conclusions, the advance of Russian troops is to a large extent “the result of the identification and tactical use of vulnerable places on Ukrainian lines.”

At the end of last week, the Reuters agency, citing a high-ranking Ukrainian military source, wrote that in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, due to Russian counterattacks, Ukraine lost more than 40% of the territory it captured during hostilities in August.

By advancing on Kursk, the UAF aimed to stop Russian attacks in eastern and northeastern Ukraine, force Russia to withdraw its forces, and give Kyiv additional leverage in any future peace negotiations. But Russian troops continue to advance in the Donetsk region.

The day before, The Economist wrote that Ukrainian intelligence believes that Russia may be preparing to attack Zaporizhzhia, and fortifications are being built near the city.
