Taiwan views such actions as part of a campaign that includes the use of irregular tactics aimed at pressuring China.
The incident happened on Sunday, when the balloon was recorded at a distance of about 111 km north of the Taiwanese port of Keelung. The bullet flew at an altitude of 10,000 meters and disappeared two hours later. According to the Ministry of Defense of Taiwan, the bullet did not cross the territory of the island.
Taiwan sees such incidents as part of Beijing’s broader strategy to pressure the island, especially in the run-up to presidential elections in January.
The island, which China claims as its territory, strongly disputes these claims and insists that only its residents have the right to decide their own future.
China has previously rejected Taiwan’s accusations against its balloons, saying they are for meteorological purposes and should not become the subject of political disputes. However, the use of Chinese balloons for spying gained international attention after the United States shot down a Chinese surveillance balloon last year, even though China claimed it was a civilian craft that accidentally veered off course.
