Turkey’s decision to close the Bosphorus and Dardanelles in accordance with the Montreux Convention since the beginning of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine has prevented the aggressor from using its advantage at sea. Ambassador of Ukraine to Turkey Vasyl Bodnar said this in an interview with Ukrinform.
“One of the key stages of Ukraine’s defense was Turkey’s closure of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits. We sank one “Moscow”, and two more Russian cruisers were waiting in the Mediterranean. And the fact that Turkey closed the straits, I believe, did not allow Russia to use its advantage at sea to seize Odessa, Mykolaiv and other territories that, according to Moscow’s plans, were to be occupied as a result of operations from the sea,” Bodnar explained.
The diplomat reminded that at the same time Turkey has become a serious transport hub for Ukraine.
“Previously, when ships with cargo for Ukraine stopped in Turkish ports, the regulatory framework did not allow the entry of Ukrainian carriers to transport these cargoes. Transport visa-free continues. “Without any licenses or permits, our companies transport goods that Ukraine desperately needs from Turkish and other ports through the territory of Turkey,” said Bodnar.
Earlier, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin said that Russia allegedly has no plans to capture Kharkiv. He informed about the “sanitary” role in what is happening now – the occupiers are “forced” to create a “sanitary zone”.
