In an interview with the publication of the Funke group, Metsola affirmatively answered the question whether the EU countries, like the United States, advocate the permission to use long-range missiles at targets in Russia, and whether Germany should supply Ukraine with TAURUS missiles.

“Yes, this is the position of the European Parliament. This demand finds broad support. Let’s see if this will lead to a corresponding change of course after the elections to the Bundestag,” Metzola said.

She noted that it is possible that such a change of course will take place even earlier, since “there are different positions in the Berlin coalition regarding the supply of TAURUS.”

The publication notes that Chancellor Olaf Scholz has long rejected TAURUS supplies. He fears that Germany may be directly involved in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Meanwhile, free democrats and “greens” are in favor of supplying such missiles to Ukraine. The debate intensified again in recent days after US President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to use US ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 300 km to strike deep into Russia. TAURUS has a range of 500 km.

Roberta Metsola noted that Ukrainian soldiers urgently need help. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, she said, rightly emphasized that Ukraine cannot wait indefinitely for large-scale military aid just because elections are being held in some Western country, while in Ukraine people die every day in the war.

She expressed concern that Russia is escalating the war and increasing missile strikes that are causing many civilian casualties. On November 21, Russia hit the Dnieper with a new medium-range hypersonic missile. This strike was probably intended to be a signal of deterrence for the West.
