It was possible to return four thousand Ukrainians from Russian captivity, but there are still thousands of people, including civilians actually taken hostage.
As RBC-Ukraine reports, Andrii Yusov, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, stated this during the discussion “Genocidal practices of the Russian Federation in Ukraine: from the Holodomor to the Russian-Ukrainian war.”
According to him, in fact, almost four thousand Ukrainians have already been returned from captivity.
“Unfortunately, we are still talking about thousands of others, and we have to fight for them, both for the military and for civilians. Civilians are a separate large bloc, here even international humanitarian law does not always provide answers to questions,” Yusov noted.
The representative of GUR emphasized that few people imagined after the Second World War, when the architecture of international security was being created, that in Europe and in the modern world there would be thousands of kidnapped civilians taken to another territory.
“Detained without even an imitation of compliance with the right-wing so-called legislation of the Russian Federation. They are just prisoners, they are hostages. These are the medieval practices that should be a thing of the past. Unfortunately, this is not the case. And there is a mass character against Ukrainian identity, Ukrainian culture,” he added.
Earlier, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, reported that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, Ukraine has returned 3,767 people, including 168 civilians, from Russian captivity. And tens of thousands of Ukrainian citizens are still in Russian captivity.
Russia and Ukraine conducted only three other prisoner of war exchanges between January 1 and August 6, 2024, involving approximately 405 Ukrainian and 423 Russian prisoners of war.
On September 14, Ukraine conducted a new exchange of prisoners. 103 soldiers returned.
