British intelligence believes that the main event that changed the nature of Russia’s war against Ukraine was the start of the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

This is stated in the British Ministry of Defense intelligence report published on Friday, November 22.

It is noted that since mid-2024, the number of UAV launches has likely given Russia space and time to restore its stockpile of cruise and ballistic missiles. In addition, the use of attack drones leads to the fact that the situation with the air defense of Ukraine is becoming increasingly tense and problematic.

The scouts noted that new strikes on Ukrainian critical infrastructure facilities are expected this winter.

At the same time, Ukraine also successfully uses drones against military facilities in Russia. In particular, during and at the end of September, Ukraine struck four Russian strategic ammunition depots. The total tonnage of munitions destroyed at these facilities is the largest loss of Russian and North Korean munitions during the war. These attacks once again highlight Russia’s inability to protect strategic military facilities from attacks by Ukrainian UAVs.

Earlier, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine wrote that a record number of launches of Russian attack drones over Ukraine was recorded in October. According to the Air Force, between August and October 2024, Russia launched 4,300 Shahed attack drones and other models imitating their characteristics.

The situation in the energy system of Ukraine is the main thing

According to the Ministry of Energy, from October 2022 to September 2024, Ukrainian energy infrastructure facilities were subjected to 1,024 Russian attacks.

On September 10, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmygal, noted that the coming winter could be the hardest.

In September, Politico wrote that winter could also be a turning point for Ukraine in the energy war, as key substations supplying Ukrainian nuclear power plants are under Russia’s sights.

According to the UN, electricity can be cut off in Ukraine for up to 18 hours a day in winter. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on September 19 that 80% of Ukraine’s thermal power plants have been destroyed, and the country needs 17 GW of power this winter.
