Gunmen opened fire on passenger cars in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing 38 people and injuring 20 others.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Associated Press reports this.

The attack took place in Kurram, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province where sectarian clashes between Sunni and Shiite Muslims have killed dozens in recent months.

Gunmen opened fire on vehicles carrying Shiite Muslims. Immediately after the attack, no one claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi informed about at least 38 dead people as a result of the “terrorist attack”. The police reported that six of the dead were women.

A representative of the local police, Azmat Ali, said that at the time of the attack, several vehicles were traveling in a convoy from the city of Parachinar to Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. At least 10 passengers are in hospital in serious condition, he added.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack. Sharif said those behind the killing of innocent civilians will not go unpunished.
