On November 21, the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda signed a decree appointing the social democrat Gintautas Palutskas as the country’s new prime minister.

The President instructed the new Prime Minister to form the Cabinet of Ministers and submit the Program of Government Activities to the Diet no later than 15 days after the appointment.

Earlier on Thursday, the Seimas of Lithuania approved Palutskas as the head of the government. 88 deputies of the Seimas voted for his candidacy, 34 voted against and six abstained.

On October 30, the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania, which won the parliamentary elections, decided on a new candidate for prime minister after the refusal of the head of the party, Vilia Blinkevičiute, to head the government.

Blinkevičiute announced that she would not take up the post of prime minister due to her age and health, and proposed former Social Democrat leader Gintautas Palutskas as prime minister. She called him “the best candidate with the necessary experience and qualities for the prime minister.”

Lithuania is one of the leaders in the amount of aid to Ukraine, as well as in terms of spending on defense – this year it has already allocated 3.2% of its GDP for these purposes, which exceeds NATO’s figure of 2%.
